A ÁGUA FOI O TEMA INSPIRADOR PARA ESTE NOVO RELACIONAMENTO CRAFT + DESIGN + NATUREZA QUE AO PERMITIR UMA LIGAÇÃO ENTRE AS MANUALIDADES, O SABER FAZER E A CULTURA DO PROJECTO, PROPORCIONOU UMA DIRECÇÃO INOVADORA NOS ARGUMENTOS E NARRATIVAS DOS ARTEFACTOS CONTEMPORÂNEOS, QUE AS ALDEIAS DO XISTO QUEREM IMPLEMENTAR, E SÃO O REFLEXO DE UMA PREOCUPAÇÃO COM A RECUPERAÇÃO DAS IDENTIDADES E A RENOVAÇÃO DAS COMUNIDADES AO SERVIÇO DA CAUSA DO HOMEM.

WATER WAS THE INSPIRING THEME FOR THIS NEW RELATIONSHIP CRAFT + DESIGN + NATURE. THE CONNECTION BETWEEN THE MANUAL CRAFTS, THE KNOW-HOW AND THE PROJECT CULTURE ALLOWED FOR AN INNOVATING DIRECTION IN THE ARGUMENTS AND NARRATIVES OF THE CONTEMPORARY ARTEFACTS, WHICH THE SCHIST VILLAGES WISH TO IMPLEMENT. AND THEY ARE THE REFLECTION OF THE CONCERN FOR THE RECOVERY OF IDENTITIES AND THE RENEWAL OF THE COMMUNITIES AT THE SERVICE OF MAN’S CAUSE.

“ONDE ESTÁ O BORDALO?”
Celebramos a pureza da água e questionamos o uso abusivo deste bem escasso. Observamos a vida que nela existe e perguntamos “até quando?” Até quando as pedras dos rios continuarão a ver passar por elas os peixes?

“WHERE IS THE BORDALO?”
We celebrate the purity of the water and question the wastage of this precious element. We look at the life existing in the water and we ask “until when?” Until when will the pebbles in the river continue to see the fishes swimming over them? Bordalo is an Iberian fresh-water fish.

Viver no campo é perceber a relação do homem com a natureza, na qual a água é vital. Nas zonas ribeirinhas a água é força motriz, é alimento para a terra e para a mesa, é fronteira e ligação, é celebração e tranquilidade. Tudo dela vem, tudo dela depende.

“LIVING THE RIVER”
Living in the countryside is understanding the relationship between man and nature where water is vital. The water is driving force, it’s food for the land and for the table,it’s a border and a bond, it’s celebration and quietness. Everything comes from it, everything depends upon it.

Preservação da biodiversidade, das inúmeras espécies que vivem nos habitats das serras. Tudo está ligado, a sobrevivência de muitas das espécies depende de outras espécies, da relação de simbiose com o meio, assim como da qualidade da água.

Protecting the biodiversity of the numerous species that live in mountainous habitats. Everything is connected: the survival of many species depends on other species, relying on a symbiosis with the environment as well as on the quality of the water.

Sendo peças de uso pessoal, é na sua relação de envolvência com o corpo que se completa a sua expressão. Foram criadas observando e sentindo a relação entre a terra e a água. Sonhei levar estas sensações até à pele, e da pele às emoções…

“AGuASALHOS”
These clothes are for personal use and it’s when they are draped around the body that their nature is rounded off. They were created by having looked at and felt the relationship between the earth and water. I dreamed of bringing these sensations close to the skin letting the emotions rise to the surface…

O curso da água esculpe as formas da natureza. No rio, o labor da água e do tempo alisa as pedras transformando-as em seixos rolados. São formas simples, perfeitas, cuja textura entoa uma música aquática.

“PEBBLES”
The watercourse sculpts nature’s shapes. In the river, water and time’s labour smoothen the stones making them into rounded pebbles. They are simple shapes, perfect, whose texture intones aquatic music.

Water acts as sustenance and a shelter to all that lives. The Vittatum pays homage to water as a symbol of generosity and resistance. Its frailty it’s a warning for all of us, that have in our hands the power to protect it, like this cocoon does in Nature.

Água corrente que molda a terra, extrai o cerne da vida, colhe a estética e fixa a forma, que se cristaliza, viaja no tempo, transforma-se em gota e molda a pedra que se faz em barro.

“WATER’S SKIN”
Running water moulding the land, extracting the core of life, reaping the aesthetic and set shape that is crystallised, travelling through time, being transformed into drops and moulding the stone that is made into clay.

“AO SABOR DA ÁGUA”
As características físicas da água associam-se ao vidro pela sua transparência e fluidez. As pedras sempre presentes no seu percurso dão origem ao movimento e às formas. Essas mesmas pedras dão a forma e o movimento à representação dos lençóis de água na transparência e espessura do vidro.

“WATER FLOWING”
The physical characteristics of water are associated to glass due to its transparency and fluidity. The ever-present stones in the course of water give rise to movement and shapes. Those stones give form and shape to the water sheets in the transparency and thickness of the glass.

Nesta colecção a madeira revela o segredo escondido na raiz que procura a chuva entranhada na terra. Aqui busca-se a essência da madeira, trabalhando-a para chegar à mesma pureza e limpidez que a água naturalmentejá tem.

“ROOT”
In this collection wood reveals its secret hidden in the root that seeks the rainwater seeping into the earth. The essence of wood is fetched out here, working it so as to attain the same purity and clarity as water naturally has already.

Relação entre a memória visual e a memória afectiva. Cada peça representa um fragmento da albufeira da Barragem de Santa Luzia. São objectos evocativos, numa relação perpetuada entre as gentes e a saudade da sua terra.

“I HAVE THE RIVER IN ME”
The relation between the visual memory and the affective memory. Each piece stands for a different component of the Santa Luzia Dam. These are allusive and symbolic objects that recall the idea of the people living there.

Neste caso, levar a água ao seu moinho é partilhar os seus intentos com os demais. É levar a toda gente esse elemento fundamental para a existência, relembrando que a água sustenta a vida.

“WATER TO YOUR MILL”
This old proverb means going ahead with things. In this case, bringing water to your mill is sharing your endeavours with others. It means bringing to everyone this vital element to our existence, once again remembering that water sustains life.

Junto ao rio escutámos a chuva que tardava em chegar. A colecção “histórias de guardar a chuva” é constituída por diversos objectos que guardam um pequeno instante.

“EMBRANCING THE RAIN”
By the river we listened to the rain that was almost coming. The collection “to keep the rain” includes several objects speaking in different ways of a given saved instant.

A perspectiva da água como condutora, como força motriz, como energia, gerou a criação destas colecções. A vitalidade que representa para o ser humano e sua ambígua relação quotidiana ficam reflectidas nas peças apresentadas onde se apela à interacção e à criatividade de quem as usa.

“PULL, PUSH”
The perspective of water as a conductor, as a driving force, as energy, generated the creation of these collections. The vitality it represents to human beings and its ambiguous day-to-day relationship are reflected in the pieces exhibited, where one appeals to the interaction and creativity of those who use them.

A água é a origem da força vital, é o movimento primeiro de onde tudo nasce. Ela cria o relevo, as texturas e os contrastes que fazem dançar a natureza.

Water is the origin of the vital force; it is the first movement from where everything is born. Water creates the relief, the texture and the contrasts that makes nature dance.

AS MANUALIDADES FAZEM PARTE DA NOSSA MEMÓRIA CULTURAL. À MEDIDA QUE A TRADIÇÃO MANUAL SE DESVANECE APAGA-SE UMA PARTE DA NOSSA MEMÓRIA COLECTIVA. UMA SOCIEDADE QUE APOIA AS MANIFESTAÇÕES ARTESANAIS MANTÉM ASSIM A SUA IDENTIDADE E SINGULARIDADE.

THE MANUAL CRAFTS ARE PART OF OUR CULTURAL MEMORY. AS THE MANUAL TRADITION FADES, A PART OF OUR COLLECTIVE MEMORY IS ERASED. A SOCIETY THAT SUPPORTS ARTEFACT MANIFESTATIONS THEREBY MAINTAINS ITS IDENTITY AND SINGULARITY.

A Rede das Aldeias do Xisto é constituída por 27 aldeias distribuídas pelo interior da Região Centro de Portugal. Estes pequenos núcleos agregam o potencial turístico regional reflectido na arquitectura, nas amenidades ambientais, na gastronomia e nas tradições, entre outros elementos culturais distintivos apresentados em produtos e serviços de excelência.
O Projecto ÁGUA MUSA consiste no desenvolvimento de uma acção de orientação criativa assistida para o desenvolvimento de uma família de artefactos temáticos representativos das Aldeias do Xisto. Esta acção constitui-se num exercício orientado por um tema aglutinador e de compreensão universal, a Água, explorando princípios, técnicas e actividades que fomentam a reflexão e o pensamento criativo procurando novas propostas na trilogia craft+design+natureza.

The Schist Village Network is composed of 27 villages spread out in the interior of the Central Region of Portugal. These small centres embody a promising future for regional tourism, reflected in their architecture, environmental amenities, gastronomy and traditions, among other distinct cultural features that are represented in the excellent quality of their products and services.
The ÁGUA MUSA Project consists of following through with a creatively guided undertaking that leads to the development of a family of themed crafts representing the Schist Villages. This activity consists of an exercise united around a common theme of universal understanding – Water – by exploring principles, techniques and pursuits that lead to reflection and creative thought seeking to fashion new proposals in the craft+design+nature trilogy.
